Synopsis

The departure of the Jewish people from the Beis Hamikdash after Shemini Atzeres is compared to “children who part from their father, and he says to them, ‘Your separation is difficult for me.’” Seemingly, it should have said, “Our separation is difficult for me,” rather than “your separation”? The explanation is that the “separation” mentioned here refers to separation between one Jew and another: Because after Shemini Atzeres, the Jewish people are going home to different places where they will remain for six months (in contrast to their departure after Pesach and Shavuos, when there is not so much time until the next Yom Tov), and it will be winter (when people go outside and meet others less frequently), the Torah therefore needs to caution that this departure should not result in “your separation.” But there is no need to caution regarding a separation between Hashem and the Jewish people chas v’shalom, because it is certain that Hashem is with every Jew at all times and in every place. And although “The whole earth is full of His glory,” He nevertheless sets aside everything else, as it were, and enters the home of every Jew, “and watches him and examines his insides and heart etc.”
