The Man Who Went In18 sept27 min

On January 15, 2019, terrorists from al-Shabaab attacked the DusitD2 hotel and office complex in Nairobi, Kenya. As civilians ran from the gunfire, one off-duty British SAS soldier made a different decision.

Christian Craighead went in.

Wearing jeans, body armor, and carrying the skills built over decades of military service, Craighead joined Kenyan security forces inside an active terrorist attack, helped locate and evacuate trapped civilians, and continued operating through a crisis that stretched deep into the night.

But this episode of The David Burnell Podcast is about more than one extraordinary day in Nairobi.

It is about what came before it.

Craighead’s path included the Parachute Regiment, the Pathfinder Platoon, combat deployments, Special Air Service selection—and failure. He did not pass SAS selection on his first attempt. Or his second. He went back a third time and succeeded.

That part of the story matters.

Because courage rarely begins when the world finally notices it. It is built years earlier through repetition, discipline, failure, correction, endurance, and the decision to keep going when quitting would be easier.

In this episode, David Burnell examines the Nairobi attack through the larger principles behind Craighead’s actions: training, selection, initiative, responsibility, courage, leadership, and valor.

What allows one person to function while others freeze?

What does elite training actually build?

What is the difference between recklessness and trained courage?
