He is a political theorist working on human needs, voice, poverty, and Marx. His first book is Marx and the Politics of Need.

In this episode, we focus on Marx and the Politics of Need. We start by talking about needs from the perspective of political science, and the different approaches out there. We discuss why people tend to talk about needs as moral facts. We explore Marxist interpretations of needs, and we focus on Dr. Boss’ reinterpretation of Marx’s concept of “need”. We talk about Wittgenstein’s work. We discuss needs as historically specific, socially constituted, and politically charged. We explore the work of Judith Butler, and needs as “performatives”. We discuss what needs “do” in a capitalist society, and whether there can be “pure” descriptions of needs. Finally, we talk about implications for the contemporary politics of need.

--

A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: PER HELGE LARSEN, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, PHIL KAVANAGH, SAMUEL ANDREEF
