In this Deepcast episode, Gary Zukav takes on one of humanity's oldest fears: the idea that evil is a force loose in the world, something separate from us that can attack, tempt, or possess us. He traces this belief back through Christianity and Buddhism, both built on the story of a young man (Jesus, Siddhartha) who faced temptation on his path to a higher state of being. In the old consciousness, that temptation gets treated as an outside enemy, an independently existing evil that only an institution like the church can help you defeat. Gary argues this framing has always been a trap, one that keeps people dependent and afraid instead of powerful.

The deeper problem, as Gary lays it out, is that treating evil as a real, external thing gives us no way to actually deal with it. You cannot punish an illusion into submission. You cannot lock up something that was never really there. As long as evil is imagined as some independent force, every attempt to fight it, through shame, punishment, or even righteous outrage, just adds more darkness to the pile.

His answer is simple: evil is not a thing at all. It is the absence of light, and the only cure for an absence is a presence. Once you understand that, the whole equation changes.

(06:13) — Why "choosing evil" is a myth: the only real choice is love or fear, and evil is just imagined darkness where none exists.

(09:08) — Gary's Sioux uncle's story of a tribal council choosing restoration over execution, and what it reveals about consequences over punishment.

(12:02) — The soul's intentions (harmony, cooperation, reverence for life), and how aligning personality with soul replaces old ethics.

(15:04) — Why fighting darkness with rage pulls you into it, while illuminating it with love actually ends it.
