84. You Have More Power and Creativity Than You Realize
In this solo episode of The Language of Behavior, Joshua Stamper reflects on a recent, in-depth conversation with Principal Kafele about the ideas and strategies behind The Language of Behavior. As the school year moves forward and the “honeymoon period” begins to fade, student behavior can become more challenging in classrooms and common spaces. Joshua reminds listeners that while students must be held accountable for their choices, consequences alone do not teach the skills students need to make different decisions in the future.
Drawing on a recent conversation with a new dean of students, Joshua breaks down four essential components for responding to behavior with intention:
Helping students take ownership of their choices.Identifying who was affected by their actions.Teaching the appropriate replacement behavior and needed skills.Connecting consequences to the behavior in a meaningful way.
Regardless of your role or title, you have more power and creativity than you may realize when supporting students through difficult moments.
