Why Success Scares You More Than Failure
<p>I got invited to a big-deal track meet three years in a row. Three years, three excuses to my coach about why he needed to use the backup runner.I was not sick. I was terrified of being good at something in front of people. This one is unscripted and a little raw. I went live because I had just gotten off a call and needed to process something that surfaced during a social media detox in August: I am not afraid of failing. I am afraid of it working. We get into the difference between the two, because they are not the same fear. Fear of failure keeps you from starting. Fear of success lets you start, lets you get close, and then hands you a perfectly reasonable excuse to fumble it at the finish line. Then there is the neurodivergent layer, which nobody talks about. Never registering your own accomplishments. Rejection sensitivity. Reading visibility as danger. Collecting endless certifications so you never have to declare yourself qualified.I also walk through the four things I actually use with clients and on myself:• Name it, tame it, claim it (mine is named Vivian)• The experience timeline, which is basically an anti-resume• The cookie jar, a physical cure for success amnesia• Sprints instead of five and ten year goalsNot sure if this is your pattern or something else entirely?
