Twenty-five years later the names still get read. The families still fold in half. And New York's first Muslim socialist mayor and AOC still found something to giggle about while it happened.

The camera cut from a man with his face buried in his arms to Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez leaning in, smiling, then laughing as relatives kept reciting the dead. They treated the reading like a side conversation at a fundraiser.   Tomorrow both of them will still have their jobs. That is the 25th anniversary in 2026: the dead get their two hours, the living get their careers, and the rest of us get to watch the difference.
