Michigan Longbow Black Bear at 3 Yards

The Bowhunter Chronicles Podcast - Episode 420: Michigan Longbow Black Bear at 3 Yards

A bear at three yards. A traditional bow. One unforgettable hunt.Michigan DNR forester Tyler Ritchie recounts his close-range bear hunt, sharing the setup, the shot, and what came after—from tracking and blood trailing to hauling the bear out of a swamp. He also talks about why bear meat and bear fat deserve more appreciation, and how committing to traditional archery changed the way he approaches hunting. Then the conversation turns to deer hunting in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Tyler draws on his forestry work and time spent outdoors to explain how he reads terrain, timber, thick cover, travel corridors, and deer sign. He shares a grounded perspective on what affects deer populations, including harsh winters, habitat, roads, hunting pressure, and predators—and why no single factor tells the whole story.Whether you’re interested in bear hunting, traditional bowhunting, whitetail deer, or understanding Upper Peninsula habitat, this episode brings together a memorable hunt and practical, boots-on-the-ground insight.
