China's top artificial intelligence models have narrowed the performance gap with their United States' rivals to around 3 percent, the lowest on record, as advances by DeepSeek are increasingly matched by a wider group of Chinese developers.

According to a report from Bloomberg Intelligence, the gap has fallen from about 9 percent in May and 15 percent earlier this year following the September release of DeepSeek's V4.1 Flash model.

Bloomberg Intelligence senior analyst Robert Lea said that the speed of the catching-up process raises fresh questions over how long the US can maintain its technological lead, and could help Chinese AI firms capture a larger share of the global market.

Notably, DeepSeek is no longer China's only serious challenger. Models developed by Alibaba, Moonshot AI and Z.ai — formerly known as Zhipu AI — are increasingly appearing near the top of global rankings.

Artificial Analysis, a model-testing platform, has placed Alibaba's Qwen, Z.ai's GLM and Moonshot's Kimi models close to the frontier, with some scoring above DeepSeek on its own composite tests.

Developers are increasingly using Chinese models. Over the 30 days through Wednesday, DeepSeek V4.1 Flash handled about 85 trillion tokens on model aggregation platform OpenRouter, making it the most-used model on the platform.
