180.Interesting Chinese Culture——The Misty Six Dynasties to the Bloodstained Jinling

The recorded history of this city can be traced back to the fifth century BCE. After  destroyed the State of Wu, he built a settlement known as Yue City in Changganli, near the southwestern corner of what is now Zhonghua Gate. This marked the beginning of the city’s documented history. During the following two thousand years, it served as the capital of ten different governments. It witnessed the prosperity of the Six Dynasties, when the city had five hundred Buddhist temples, more than one hundred thousand monks and nuns, and a population of nearly one million. Jiankang and ancient Rome were known as two great centers of classical civilization in the world at that time.
