College just in case is a purchase, not a plan. I agree with George Kamel that a young woman needs more than the hope of marrying rich. But telling her to buy a degree skips the question that matters: what work would help her build the life she wants? A real backup plan has to work.

Can she support herself? Can she get hired? Can she build a skill? Can she change direction without wrecking her finances? A degree only makes sense when there is a clear career goal that calls for it. Agatha Christie gives us a different way to think about work. She read, wrote, studied music, and gained life experience.

During World War I, she worked in a hospital dispensary and learned about medicines and poisons. That knowledge helped her write The Mysterious Affair at Styles. Technical work gave her material for a creative career. Your daughter's first job does not have to look like her final goal.

It can help her earn, build useful skills, and learn what she is good at. Start with the income, schedule, work environment, and location she wants. Then look for in-demand entry-level work that fits. A backup plan should help her support herself and keep her future choices open.
