Fun Facts About Hedgehogs

Fun Facts About Hedgehogsil y a 3 jours16 min

Hedgehogs (Erinaceidae) are small, spined nocturnal mammals native to regions across Europe, Asia, and Africa, recognized for their distinct physical adaptations and survival behaviors. As opportunistic insectivores, hedgehogs feed primarily on earthworms, beetles, and caterpillars, using keen senses and tactile whiskers to navigate their surroundings in total darkness. Beyond relying on their dense coats of protective quills to deter predators, hedgehogs engage in a distinctive grooming behavior termed self-anointing, where they chew pungent or novel environmental substances into a frothy saliva and distribute the paste across their spines with their tongues. In colder climates, European hedgehogs enter true winter hibernation within insulated nests known as hibernacula. Throughout this period, their core body temperature drops near ambient freezing levels, cellular respiration is suppressed, metabolic rates drop by over 90 percent, and their heart rates fall from roughly 190 beats per minute to fewer than 20.

Belonging to the mammalian order Eulipotyphla alongside shrews and moles, hedgehogs possess an evolutionary lineage featuring extreme variations in body size, from the ancient two-inch fossil Silvacola acares to Deinogalerix koenigswaldi, a prehistoric, cat-sized giant that evolved on an isolated Italian landmass via insular gigantism. Historically referred to in Middle English as "urchins" before adopting the name "hedgehog" in the mid-15th century to describe their habit of snuffling through hedgerows with pig-like grunts, these animals face modern ecological challenges driven by urban habitat fragmentation. Because an individual hedgehog often travels one to two miles each night to forage, find clean water, and seek mates, modern wildlife conservation efforts emphasize the creation of five-inch fence gaps known as "hedgehog highways" and the elimination of synthetic chemical slug pellets to prevent secondary poisoning.
