PotLuck Saturday: The Lost Art of Pen Pals

Happy Pot Luck Saturday! Fourth-grade pen pals, summer camp friendships, chocolate mousse pie, prison inmates, and a letter-writing assignment that brought in the FBI. Yes, we're going back to the days of pen-pals. We talk about school pen pal programs, handwritten letters on double-lined paper, exchanging stickers and photographs, and the excitement of waiting for someone to write back. We talk reconnecting with old camp friends decades later, caddy camp at Poland Springs, Maine, and Kev tracking down his fourth-grade pen pal, Arnold… although actually reaching out might be another story. We talk stamp collecting, cassette tapes sent through the mail, and a long night in Boston that ended with an unexpected reunion, Buzzy's roast beef, and the secret behind Chinatown's famous "cold tea." Then it's the golden age of pen pals, and the surprising number of friendships and romances that began with two strangers exchanging letters. We talk the Wisconsin girl who married her pen pal from India, two teenagers who exchanged more than 100 recorded tapes before meeting, and two childhood correspondents who finally met face-to-face 43 years later. Plus, Harvey Weinstein, Kitty Genovese's killer, a California girl who stole her cousin's pen pal, and a classroom full of Oregon fourth graders whose letters to the Soviet Union attracted the attention of J. Edgar Hoover. It's a Pot Luck Saturday with postage stamps, long-lost friends, school assignments, unexpected romances, questionable correspondents, and the days when checking the mailbox could actually be exciting. We'll Talk Shawtly!
