415 | Short Story: The Last Flamebearer (Advanced English Story)

Title: The Last Flamebearer

Level: Advanced (C1-C2)

Description

For three hundred and twelve years, the Hearthfire of Vardenhal has burned without a break. Then a three-day storm ends, the hearth-keepers climb the Hall of Embers, and they find nothing but cold ash. The city has one hundred and ten days of fuel left. The only living flame in the world burns forty days' march away, on the far side of the deadliest ice on earth.

Kaela Dran, the daughter of the keeper who died trying to save the fire, sets out with a small, weary company: a silent guide, a young archer, an old archivist, and a soldier assigned by the Chancellor himself. The ice is not the only thing that wants the flame to fail. Someone in the company is working against her, and by the time she learns the truth, the cost has already begun to mount.

The Last Flamebearer is an original heroic adventure, written for advanced English learners in a vivid, cinematic register. It builds through blizzards, betrayal, and sacrifice toward a complete and moving ending in which the flame returns, the guilty are named, and every loss along the road is honored.
