Episode 130: The Cornell Conversation - Would Your Teen Follow Jesus When Everyone Else Stays Silent?

The Cornell story is everywhere right now, and if you’re raising teenagers, there’s a good chance they’ve already heard pieces of it on TikTok, in group chats, or from friends.

But this episode isn’t about dissecting the allegations, deciding who is telling the truth, or trying to determine exactly what happened that night.

It’s about a different question:

What do we do with a story like this as moms raising teenagers to know and follow Jesus?

I’m sharing the very different conversations I’ve had with my 17-year-old daughter and my 15-year-old son, as well as the conversation I plan to have with my daughter who is already living on a college campus.

We’re talking about alcohol, drugs, sexual safety, corn, being the person who speaks up when something isn’t right, and why our responsibility as parents goes beyond teaching our daughters how to protect themselves or teaching our sons not to cause harm.

Because eventually our kids will be standing in rooms we’re not in.

What happens when they see something they know is wrong?

What if speaking up means risking a friendship, being labeled uncool, or standing completely alone?

And most importantly, what does following Jesus look like in that moment?

We’ll also talk about how we pray when the allegations are horrific, the truth is still being determined, and it’s tempting to appoint ourselves judge and jury from our own living rooms.

Scriptures referenced in this episode

James 1:5 — Asking God for wisdom
John 15:18–19 — Following Jesus when the world doesn’t approve
James 4:17 — Knowing the good we ought to do
Proverbs 31:8 — Speaking up for those who cannot speak for themselves
Romans 3:23 — The reality of sin
1 John 1:9 — Confession, repentance and forgiveness
Luke 10:25–37 — The Good Samaritan and what it means to be a neighbor

A Bible I’m loving for teenagers 🤍

I’ve been gifting the ESV Student Study Bible to teenagers in my life because I want the young people I love to do more than hear adults tell them what God says. I want them learning how to open His Word, understand it, and know it for themselves.

It’s designed specifically for students, with study notes, background infor
