"Visited A Nightclub On Taxpayer Dollars" Newsom Blocks Oversight

Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed a bill designed to strengthen oversight of California's High-Speed Rail Authority — and the timing is damning. AB 1608 would have let the Office of Inspector General hire more skilled auditors and sign contracts independently. Newsom signed the veto just two weeks after that same watchdog released a scathing report finding nearly $600,000 in unallowable travel expenses charged by rail consultants: first-class flights, luxury car services, and a nightclub visit on the public's dime.

The veto message dressed up the decision in bureaucratic language, but the effect is straightforward — the one agency with a mandate to investigate the High-Speed Rail Authority just lost the staffing it needed to do that job. This is the same project that has shrunk from a Los Angeles–San Francisco corridor to a Merced-to-Bakersfield segment, with cost estimates now ballooning past $230 billion.

Sean connects the dots between Newsom's veto, the audit scandal, and the governor's unmistakable positioning for a 2028 presidential run — laying out why the person who owns this project's legacy had every incentive to keep the oversight office understaffed.

Subscribe to @reasonablenews and hit the notification bell for daily news commentary that doesn't pull punches.

#NFRP #GavinNewsom #CaliforniaHighSpeedRail

GO PREMIUM WITH REASONABLE+ FOR UNCENSORED ACCESS 🌟
https://ReasonableTV.com/

🛍️ MERCH - https://Store.ReasonableTV.com/

💬 JOIN our FREE Discord Community!
