Aileen from Libraries
Aileen Clear is a Collections Librarian for the Winnipeg Public Library. As a member of the Community Services Department, she helps choose books, movies, music, and digital materials. Aileen shares how the library decides which titles to buy from the millions of new titles published each year. The collection needs to be balanced and reflect Winnipeg’s many communities and interests. Materials are offered in more than 20 languages, along with books and resources for readers of all ages. Aileen also shares about surprise bestsellers and what happens when a book suddenly becomes popular because of a TV show or celebrity recommendation. Listeners will learn why some favourites are always in demand and how the library manages waiting lists and extra copies. The episode also explores the growing use of e-books and audiobooks, as well as streaming services available with a library card. It is a behind-the-scenes look at how the Winnipeg Public Library builds a collection for the whole city.
