IP Group's Matter Machine: Dr Gordon Sanghera sees 'urgent unmet need' for AI-discovered materials
Matter Machine's Dr Gordon Sanghera spoke with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about the company's £4 million oversubscribed pre-Series A funding round, led by IP Group PLC (LSE:IPO), and its plans to accelerate AI-powered materials discovery and commercialise technology developed at the University of Liverpool.
Sanghera, co-founder of Oxford Nanopore Technologies, explained how the funding will help turn academic research into commercially viable technologies. Matter Machine's platform combines AI, machine learning, materials synthesis and precision characterisation, with Sanghera stressing that AI predictions alone can't solve the challenges of producing materials suited to real-world use.
On the market opportunity, he said: "There is an unprecedented, urgent unmet need for new materials today to meet some of the biggest societal challenges we face," pointing to demand driven by climate change, electrification, sustainable energy and shortages of rare minerals.
Matter Machine is exploring opportunities across batteries, catalysts and advanced manufacturing, with sodium batteries highlighted as an emerging area of interest. It will also draw on the University of Liverpool's materials expertise and its £82 million Materials Innovation Factory.
Over the next two years, priorities include identifying industrial partners, understanding commercial requirements and demonstrating early proof-of-concept applications, engaging both established industrial businesses and emerging technology companies.
The discussion also covered lessons from Sanghera's time at Oxford Nanopore and the importance of building teams that can translate academic innovation into commercially viable systems.
