That You May Know – Part One | Can We Really Know the Truth?

How do you know what you know? In a world where everyone claims to have "their own truth," how can we distinguish genuine knowledge from personal opinion, emotion, tradition, or deception?

In Part One of That You May Know, we wrestle with one of life's most important questions: Can we truly know what is true? This sermon introduces the concept of epistemology—the study of knowledge—and explains why it matters for every area of life, including faith, relationships, morality, culture, parenting, decision-making, and eternity.

Throughout the message, we examine how people often settle into beliefs that conveniently support the lifestyle they want to live rather than beliefs that are actually justified by truth. From conspiracy theories and cultural relativism to false prophecy, religious claims, and everyday assumptions, we're challenged to examine whether our confidence is grounded in reality or simply in what we want to believe.

Most importantly, this sermon points us toward the hope found in Jesus Christ, who declared, "You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." While this first message intentionally leaves important questions unresolved, it prepares us to discover in Part Two how Christians can have genuine confidence in the truth of the gospel.

How do we know what is true?

What is epistemology, and why does it matter?

Can feelings determine truth?

Is there such a thing as absolute truth?

Can we trust our own experiences?

How should Christians evaluate competing religious claims?

Why do people believe what they believe?

How does culture shape our understanding of truth?

What dangers come from settling into comfortable beliefs?

How can we know that we have eternal life?

1 Corinthians 8:1–3 — Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up

John 8:32 — You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free

2 Timothy 1:12 — I know whom I have believed

1 Thessalonians 5:1–3 — Peace and safety before the Day of the Lord

Luke 12:13–21
