#179: Dr Ian Renshaw (Parent of Athlete) Play, Patience and Raising a Cricketer

In this episode of Scoreboard, Chris Titley is joined by Dr Ian Renshaw, researcher, coach, educator and father of Australian cricketer Matt Renshaw, for a thoughtful conversation about junior sport, parenting, talent development and the long road from backyard games to professional cricket.

Ian reflects on Matt’s recent return to Test cricket and the pride that comes with watching your child work through the highs, lows and uncertainty of elite sport. He also looks back on his own lifelong love of sport, from football and cricket in England to coaching, teaching and eventually building a career around how people learn, play and develop.

The conversation explores Matt’s early years in cricket, including the move from New Zealand to Brisbane, junior club cricket at Albany Creek, representative selections, missed teams and the challenge of being a late developer. Ian explains why early success does not always predict long-term success, and why some kids who dominate at 12 or 13 can fall away while others arrive later and keep improving.

There is plenty for parents and coaches in this episode. Ian talks about early specialisation, playing multiple sports, modifying games for kids, and why junior sport should create more touches, more involvement and more chances to solve problems. From smaller cricket boundaries to different ball sizes in basketball, he makes the case for designing sport around children rather than forcing children into adult versions of the game too soon.

Ian also shares what it is like being the parent of an elite cricketer. He speaks honestly about nerves, expectations, car rides home, knowing when to say nothing, and the importance of giving young athletes space. For him, the goal was never to over-coach technique, but to create games, ask better questions and help Matt stay connected to the joy of playing.

For Ian, the advice is simple: let kids play a lot, follow their passion, keep expectations low, support them when it gets hard, and never forget that sport should still feel like something they want to do.

🔗 Show notes

This episode was Powered by Swyftx — Where can crypto take you?👉 https://swyftx.com/about/

Join over 1.5m users in Australia and NZ

The Do You Budget Segment is powered by Poc
