Bishop George Davidson, Bishop of Connor, preached at the St Paul's and St Barnabas 175th Anniversary Confirmation Service on Wednesday 30th. His text was Matthew 21, the parable of the two sons, and his theme was the gap between what we say and what we do. Six candidates, Owen, Glenn, Ian, Francis, Lisa, and William, were confirmed at this service. The Bishop began by reflecting on what it means to say of someone that they are a person of their word: dependable, reliable, someone whose yes means yes. Neither son in Jesus's parable quite managed it. One said no and then went to the vineyard. One said yes and never showed up. Jesus told this story to religious leaders who knew all the right answers and said all the right things, but whose hearts were far from God. His verdict was shocking: tax collectors and prostitutes were ahead of them in the queue for the kingdom, because those people heard God's word and received it. The sermon ends with a direct word to those being confirmed. Saying "I choose Jesus" at a confirmation service is significant and precious. But what matters is whether that choice is made again tomorrow, and the day after, and every day of the life that follows. Recorded at St Paul's and St Barnabas, Belfast.
