Episode 61: The 11,000 Year Old Human/Leopard Statue

<p>Eleven thousand years ago, someone in what is now southeastern Turkey sat down with a block of limestone and carved a story we still cannot read. A person sitting on the back of a leopard. In Episode 61, we bring that story back into the light.</p><p>Imagine you are standing in the dry hills of the Tektek Mountains. The wind that tastes like dust and thyme. Its a landscape that looks empty until you realize it is anything but. Under those hills sits a necklace of ancient sites archaeologists now call Taş Tepeler, the Stone Hills. Göbekli Tepe is the famous sibling, the one with the T-shaped pillars and the wild-animal carvings that rewrote textbooks. About thirty miles east of it is Karahan Tepe. Same world. Same era. Less famous. Just as strange. </p><p><br></p><p>Karahan Tepe belongs to the Pre-Pottery Neolithic. That is a fancy way of saying: people were already building big stone rooms, already carving human faces and animal bodies, and they had not invented pottery yet. No wheels. No writing. No metal tools. Woolly mammoths were still wandering other parts of the planet. And here, on a hill in what is now Şanlıurfa Province, communities were cutting chambers into bedrock and lining walls with benches. </p><p><br></p><p>Systematic digging only started in 2019, under Professor Necmi Karul of Istanbul University. In a handful of seasons the site has poured out human statues, leopard heads, snarling cats on people’s backs, a giant seated figure with ribs like a starving man, even a T-shaped pillar with a human face. The people who lived here were not doodling.
