Billy Joel Is ‘Not Allowed to Drive’ amid NPH Diagnosis. Fans Can Purchase His Motorcycles Instead
Billy Joel isn’t getting behind the wheel anytime soon.
The legendary musician, 77, is auctioning off his collection of motorcycles for charity next month — and says that amid his illness, he’s not able to go for a spin anyway.
“I can’t drive right now. I’m not allowed to drive,” Joel told The Hollywood Reporter. “And I can’t do performances because what the neurologist told me, every time you do a show, it’s like you’re getting a concussion.”
The “Piano Man” singer announced in 2025 that he’d been diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a treatable brain condition that can affect hearing, vision and balance.
While he still has to undergo tests to see if he can get back on stage, Joel — who recently revealed that he had a shunt implanted — told THR that his health is “good,” and mostly just affects his balance.
