The Night She Watched the Phone at the Hungry River Inn

The Night She Watched the Phone at the Hungry River Inn19 juil.8 min

December 1997, the Hungry River Inn, three miles outside of Hungry River, West Virginia. Luna was twenty-three, working the front desk for seventy-five dollars a week and a room above the boiler. The inn had nine rooms, a static-washed television in the lobby, and a switchboard that hadn't rung after midnight in the six months she'd been there. Then, just past two in the morning on a Tuesday, it rang. The caller was a woman who said she was in Room 6, but Room 6 was standing open and empty all night. Luna listened. She kept listening. And what she heard on that line — the breathing, the silence, the thing that finally spoke — she still hears sometimes when a phone rings late and she's alone. This is that night. Every word of it.
