Two Builders

Key Points

This parable is the ending of the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus is not giving a building story. He is calling hearers to become doers.

Not everyone who says “Lord, Lord” will enter the kingdom, but the one who does the will of the Father.

Both builders heard the same words. Both built. Both faced the same storm. The difference was obedience.

The wise builder puts his hope in Christ and actually does what Jesus says. The foolish builder hears and does not do.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Reverence and awe of a holy God give us insight to obey.

Grace does not cancel obedience. Jesus upheld the Father’s will perfectly and now empowers us by the Spirit to walk it out.

Working out our salvation with fear and trembling is not earning salvation. It is responding to the gift we have already received.

Blessed are those who hear the Word of God and keep it. Little yeses add up into a house that stands.

Discussion

Justin told Pastor Bob, “I hear it, but I have not done it.” Where does that sentence land on you?

Jesus said some will say “Lord, Lord” and still hear, “I never knew you.” How is knowing Jesus different from being around church activity?

Both houses faced the same storm. What storm is testing the foundation of your life right now?

Pastor Bob said the fear of the Lord is reverence and awe, not panic. What would it look like for you to recover a holy fear of God this week?

Where have you been hearing Jesus clearly but still choosing your own way?

“Little by little, little yeses instead of no.” What is one small obedience the Holy Spirit is asking you to practice this week?

If your house is not on the Rock yet, what would it mean today to stop striving, confess Jesus, and start building on Him?
