Lesson 18: Thinking and Language — The Conceptual Ratchet
A beaver builds a dam without any idea what a dam is. It follows an instinct refined over millions of years, and then the instinct stops. It can't ask what else water could be held back for.
A human watching the beaver can form the concept DAM, and a chain of reasoning follows: reservoir, stored water, controlled flow, a turning wheel, eventually electricity. None of it was in the beaver's instinct. All of it became possible once the idea had a handle.
Lesson 18: Thinking and Language — The Conceptual Ratchet covers what concepts are, why we reason with two kinds of model, one explicit and one running beneath awareness, and how concepts power the third ratchet, the one that is distinctly human.
