The Horrifying Case of Hana Grace Rose Williams

<p>This week, Drewby and Yergy head to Africa to discuss the case of Hana Grace Rose Williams, (born Hana Alemu Befekadu) a 13-year-old Ethiopian-born girl who died of hypothermia and severe malnutrition after suffering years of horrific abuse at the hands of her adoptive parents in Sedro-Woolley, Washington. Her tragic death sparked international outrage and cast a spotlight on the lack of oversight in international adoptions and the dangers of extreme, isolationist parenting practices. Hana was adopted from an Ethiopian orphanage in 2008 by Larry and Carri Williams, a Christian homeschooling couple who had six biological children. The couple also adopted a younger Ethiopian boy. Once in the United States, Hana and her adopted brother were subjected to systematic isolation, severe physical beatings, and chronic starvation. Hana lost more than 30 pounds in the two years leading up to her death. She was forced to sleep in a cold barn or locked closet, use a portable toilet outside, and wash with a garden hose. The parents heavily relied on strict, controversial disciplinary tactics derived from the book &quot;To Train Up a Child&quot; by Michael and Debi Pearl. On May 12, 2011, Hana was stripped of her clothing and forced to stay outside in the backyard as punishment on a rainy night where temperatures dropped to roughly 40°F (or 4°C).
