Order of the Solar Temple: Why the Deaths Continued After the Leaders Died24 sept.29 min

The leaders were dead. The killing continued.

In October 1994, fires in Canada and Switzerland exposed a catastrophe linked to the Order of the Solar Temple. Its founders, Joseph Di Mambro and Luc Jouret, were among the dead. Fourteen months later, sixteen more people were discovered in a French forest. In March 1997, another house burned in Quebec.

Across three waves, seventy-four lives were lost.

How did a movement remain deadly after the men who built it were gone?

In this episode of The Missing Why, we trace the Solar Temple’s transformation from a promise of spiritual survival into a doctrine that called death “transit.” Behind its secret ceremonies and staged manifestations, authority reached into money, marriage, parenting—and who was permitted to decide whether another person would live.

We follow the insiders who exposed the deception, the family whose departure did not protect them, and the surviving followers who carried the movement’s beliefs beyond the first fires. Through investigative findings and attributed accounts, we examine coercion, betrayal, and the disturbing possibility that a leader’s death can deepen the authority of his message.

At the center are the people whose lives the doctrine could never fully explain—including three teenagers who had to tell their parents they wanted to live.

When death becomes part of the promise, what can break its hold?
