Who Is Lord? — Acts 19
Paul spends nearly three years in Ephesus, a city built on commerce, the temple of Artemis, and magic so famous that spells were literally called Ephesian words — and this Sunday's message in Acts 19 asks what happens when Jesus stops being someone we believe in and becomes the Lord we surrender to. Three things follow: imitation gets exposed (the seven sons of Sceva learn you can borrow someone's vocabulary but not their relationship with Jesus), compromise gets burned (believers torch roughly $12 million worth of magic books), and idols get threatened (Demetrius the silversmith starts a riot because the gospel reached his wallet). The message closes with one question for every heart: what in my life would make me angry if Jesus asked me to give it up — and is today the day to put it in the fire?
