UC Santa Cruz

In this episode of the Rugby NorCal Podcast, we highlight the University of California, Santa Cruz Rugby program and what makes it one of the most unique D1A club programs in the country. Competing against varsity powerhouses while operating as a club, UCSC Rugby has built a gritty, athlete-led culture focused on accountability, adaptability, and academic excellence.

The conversation explores UCSC’s Skill, Systems, Mindset coaching philosophy, its inclusive approach to player development, and the role of the Black and Gold Society alumni network in funding the program and mentoring current players. We also discuss recruiting standards, academic expectations, and real pathways from UCSC Rugby to professional opportunities, including the journey of former Slug Jackson Zabierek, now with the Chicago Hounds.

This episode is ideal for prospective student-athletes, parents, coaches, and alumni interested in high-level collegiate rugby and long-term player development.
