Jobs report far below expectations, unemployment ticks up

According to data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) on October 2, 2026, the U.S. economy added just 29,000 nonfarm payroll jobs last month. This is far below the 84,000 to 90,000 jobs economists had widely anticipated. Concurrently, the nationwide unemployment rate rose to 4.2% from 4.1%.
