From First Sighting to 100,000 Chasers: Melissa Kaelin and The Michigan Aurora Chasers Movement (09-27-26)

On this episode of West Michigan Weekend, Phil Tower welcomes back Melissa F. Kaelin, author, longtime aurora chaser, and founder of Michigan Aurora Chasers.

Melissa shares the experience that sparked her fascination with the Northern Lights and how the group she founded in 2021 has grown into a community of more than 100,000 people. She also explains what it takes to see the aurora in Michigan, how to make sense of forecasts, and what first-time chasers should know before heading out—even if their only camera is a smartphone.

Melissa also discusses The Shape of the Sky, a forthcoming book bringing together aurora photographs from across Michigan, and the ninth annual Aurora Summit, taking place November 6–8 in Houghton.

The conversation offers both practical advice and a reminder of the wonder waiting in Michigan’s night sky.

Aurora Summit registration closes October 1.
