Fun Facts About Arenal Volcano
Arenal Volcano, situated near the Cordillera de Tilarán range in northwestern Costa Rica, is the country’s youngest stratovolcano, having formed approximately 7,500 years ago. Rising to an elevation of 5,358 feet, the symmetrical conical peak developed through alternating layers of basaltic andesite lava and pyroclastic deposits over at least ten major eruptive cycles. After roughly 450 years of dormancy, Arenal reawakened in July 1968 following several days of precursor earthquakes and hydrological changes. This blast initiated an unbroken 42-year period of continuous volcanic activity characterized by daily Strombolian explosions, incandescent rockfalls, and lava output, establishing the mountain as an essential global site for volcanological research until it entered a non-eruptive resting phase in October 2010.
Beyond its geological history, Arenal shapes Costa Rica’s regional ecology, clean energy grid, and natural landscape. The devastation of the 1968 eruption stripped the western slopes down to bare volcanic stone, creating an ideal setting for scientists to document primary ecological succession as pioneer lichens, mosses, and ferns gradually restored soil fertility and gave rise to a multi-tiered tropical rainforest. At the volcano's base, the expansion of Lake Arenal in 1979 created the country’s largest hydroelectric reservoir, which historically supplied up to 70 percent of Costa Rica’s electricity while irrigating downstream agricultural lands. In addition, geothermal heat from subterranean magma chambers warms descending rainwater to produce mineral-rich hot springs along riverbeds like the Tabacón River, while local diurnal microclimates regularly shroud the summit in clouds by mid-morning.
