Will Satellite-To-Mobile Deals Reshape Carrier Economics In Europe?
Bloomberg reports that Europe’s top carriers are discussing a satellite-to-mobile venture as direct-to-device services expand globally. Direct-to-device relies on 3GPP Release 17 non-terrestrial standards that let standard smartphones connect to satellites. Apple supported Emergency SOS via satellite with a $450 million commitment to U.S. infrastructure partners in 2022, primarily Globalstar. SpaceX and T-Mobile US began early direct-to-cell texting in 2024, while AST SpaceMobile conducted 5G voice and data tests with BlueWalker 3 in 2023. In Europe, Eutelsat and OneWeb merged in 2023 to form Eutelsat Group, and SES and Viasat serve mobility markets that could adapt to direct-to-device. Regulatory approvals, spectrum coordination, and device roadmaps remain key constraints for commercial rollout.
