New hope in Psychiatry with Dr Joanna Taylor

Dr Joanna Taylor is a clinical psychiatrist. Her clinical perspective is further enriched by her background in English literature and political philosophy.

She is a generalist with a deep commitment to careful diagnosis and long-term patient care. She has particular interests in ADHD, bipolar disorder, hormonal mental health, psychotherapy, and the rapidly evolving field of interventional psychiatry.

Dr Taylor has also played an important role in public mental health in South Africa. Following the Life Esidimeni tragedy, she served on Gauteng’s Mental Health Review Boards. She currently serves on the national SASOP Executive Committee’s Interventional Psychiatry Special Interest Group.

In this wide-ranging conversation, we examine the limitations of some longstanding approaches to anxiety, mood and depression. We consider how symptoms might be understood not only as sources of distress, but also as signals and potential levers for meaningful change. We explore the deeper work of healing through psychotherapy and other adjunctive treatments.

We discuss adolescent mental health, the pressures facing young people today, and the complexities and potential risks of early pharmaceutical intervention during a period of ongoing psychological, physical, and sexual development.

Looking ahead with hope, we explore the promise of interventional psychiatry, including treatments such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and ketamine, and consider how these evolving options may offer new possibilities for people who have not responded to conventional treatments.

Our conversation touches on the importance of approaching major life and hormonal transitions with awareness, curiosity, and compassion.

This is a deeply refreshing and inclusive conversation with a psychiatrist who brings insight, humility, openness, and warmth to the difficult, but often profoundly rewarding landscape of her work.

You can learn more about interventional psychiatry through Dr Taylor's co-founded practice, https://www.syntonic.me
