Healing Doesn't Have to Feel as Heavy As Hurting: Supporting Mental Health With More Play (encore) [280]

Healing Doesn't Have to Feel as Heavy As Hurting: Supporting Mental Health With More Play (encore) [280]12 aug39 min

We're digging into a reframe that can change the way a lot of us think about depression, anxiety, stress, and mental health treatment. The reframe has to do with the very common belief that there's one logical fix waiting to be found and that once found, we'd feel better and all will be fixed. The truth is that the way through overthinking, stress, and even anxiety and depression looks a little different for every person. Another thing we'll work to reframe in this episode is the culturally reinforced illusion that feeling better has to be just as heavy as feeling bad. The main strategy we'll lean on to go beyond these common obstacles is right in line with our Elements of Fun and Recreation... it's play! Truly, play is powerful.

Note: This is an encore episode, originally aired during Joy Lab's Element of Fun. It's replaying here during the month of Re-Creation because it grounds the science of play in some of the best research available — and because if you haven't heard it, now is exactly the right time.

FAQ

Q: I know I should do something fun but I just can't make myself — what's actually going on?

A: This episode names some main obstacles clearly: anhedonia (the inability to feel pleasure that is a red flag for depression), the belief that there's one logical fix waiting, metacognition blocking you from being present during play, and the fear of losing or not doing it right — and offers specific practical strategies for each one.

Q: Does healing from depression really have to be so heavy and hard, or can fun actually be part of it?
