Attack on the Black Hills

On this episode, Nick sits down with two matriarch warriors who have been fighting to protect the He Sapa for decades: Madonna Thunder Hawk (Oohenumpa Lakota), a longtime Indigenous organizer, and Lilias Jarding, Executive Director of the Black Hills Clean Water Alliance. Since the 1970s, they have organized both Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples to stand up against mining threats from corporations in the Black Hills. Nick speaks with them about this long legacy of resistance, as well as some of the current threats to sites in the Black Hills, such as Craven Canyon, the Dewey-Burdock uranium project, and the open-pit mine proposed next to Mato Tipila (Devil's Tower). They also share why resistance to these projects is both important and effective, along with some actions we can all take to help defend these lands.
