416 | Short Story: The Last Librarian of Mars (Intermediate English Story)

Title: The Last Librarian of Mars

Level: Upper-Intermediate (B2-C1)

Description

Ninety years after its founding, the Martian colony of Arcadia stores everything in a perfect digital archive. The only person who still works with paper is Imani Okafor, the last librarian, who dusts four thousand old books that nobody reads. Then her young assistant notices something impossible: every history book in the vault skips the same four years.

As the colony announces plans to shut down the library, Imani follows a dead predecessor's strange last instruction and finds a secret hidden inside the spine of an old novel. What it reveals about the missing years, and about the powerful family that governs Arcadia, forces her to choose between staying silent and telling the truth to everyone on Mars.

The Last Librarian of Mars is a thoughtful, suspenseful science fiction mystery about memory, courage, and the power of books, written for upper-intermediate and advanced English learners. It ends with a clear resolution that answers every question the story asks.
