Nick Pivetta returned to the mound after missing months with an injury and gave the San Diego Padres exactly what they needed — five scoreless innings in a 3-2 win over the Washington Nationals.

Fernando Tatis Jr. went 3-for-4, Manny Machado had two hits, an RBI and scored twice, and Jackson Merrill delivered three hits and two RBI as the Padres built a 3-0 lead. Washington made things tense with Dylan Crews’ two-run homer off Kyle Hart in the sixth, but Bradgley Rodriguez, Adrian Morejon and Mason Miller shut the door from there.
