Ole Miss endured an even wilder finish, beating No. 24 Louisville 41–38 on Lucas Carneiro’s late field goal after surrendering a 14-point fourth-quarter lead. Trinidad Chambliss delivered when it mattered, but an injury to star running back Kewan Lacy became another major concern for the Rebels.

Lane Kiffin could not have scripted a better beginning to his LSU tenure. The Tigers overwhelmed Clemson 51–10 in Baton Rouge, immediately looking like a legitimate SEC and national championship contender. LSU’s dominant performance was the biggest statement of opening weekend—and an early warning that Kiffin may have the Tigers ahead of schedule.

Elsewhere, several SEC favorites handled their opening assignments comfortably. We loved what we saw from Alabama QB Keelon Russell and Tennessee QB Faizon Brandon in their first career starts. Texas rolled past Texas State, Tennessee overwhelmed Furman, Oklahoma shut out UTEP and Missouri’s new-look passing attack flashed major potential in a 54–14 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Austin Simmons threw four touchdowns before halftime for Mizzou, offering an early glimpse of one of the conference’s possible breakout quarterbacks.

Week 1 ultimately belonged to LSU, but the close calls for Auburn and Ole Miss showed how quickly preseason expectations can be tested once the games begin.
