How to Raise Kids With Strong Values While Building a Business - EP 313

When I interviewed for my all boys high school, I mentioned in passing that my family ate dinner together every night. I didn't think it was special. That's just what we did. Nobody got up until everyone was finished.

Afterward the priest pulled my dad aside and asked if it was really true, every night. My dad said yeah, every night, no matter what. The priest said something my dad never forgot: I can count on less than four fingers the families I've ever met who actually do that. Hundreds of families and fewer than four ate together every single night.

I didn't get it until years later. My senior year we did a three day retreat built to help kids find their identity. My parents asked what I learned. I said the food was good. There was nothing left to find because my identity was already built. It got instilled at the dinner table, one ordinary night at a time, before any retreat got a shot at me.

Here's why it matters if you're building something. Whether you like it or not, the world is going to disciple your kids. Their phone, their friends, the culture, somebody is going to tell them who they are. The only question is whether you got there first. And this is straight leadership too: what you protect daily is what you actually value, not the words on your website. My dad ran a business and still made the table non negotiable. You can be a killer in the boardroom and completely present for twenty minutes at home. Those two things are not in conflict.

So pick your table. Maybe it's dinner, maybe it's the drive to school, maybe twenty minutes before bed. Then make it a law, not a nice idea. Because you can build an empire and still lose the only people it was ever supposed to be for.
