How I Built a Medical Empire From One Rented Room - EP 320

I sat down with Chris Kille on the Building Great Companies podcast and told him the whole story, including the part most people skip. Before Genesis Lifestyle Medicine was a nine figure company, my wife and I rented out our nice Palm Springs house with the pool and the mountain view and moved into a single rented room in a five bedroom house we shared with strangers so we could save every dollar to build the business. That's where it actually started.

We get into the moment that pushed me out of my job: I saw 126 patients in a single urgent care shift, made about two thousand dollars for it and realized the company cleared twenty to thirty thousand off my work that day. That was my f-you moment. If I was going to do the work, I was going to own the upside.

Then Chris and I get into the real business lessons. Why I grew through vertical integration, buying up my highest cost of goods (the pharmacy, the PRP company, the skincare, the marketing) instead of chasing shiny objects and the garage door company analogy I use to explain which verticals are smart and which ones will sink you. Why shiny object syndrome is a trap when your core business is already making money and growing. How you can scale almost any company toward $100 million by acquiring or partnering with your competition, and the red flags I look for before I buy a business, starting with zero culture and no core values.

And I don't skip the hard part. We walk through the near half-billion-dollar sale that fell apart, why 2024 was the best time to sell and 2025 became the worst and how walking away led us to tear the company down to the studs, cut around 60 locations almost overnight and rebuild leaner to reach that nine figure position ten times faster. It was the worst I ever felt as a business owner and my bank account had never been healthier.
