<p>Mishna Yomi - Ohalos 8:3-4 - By R&#39; Shloimie Friedman</p><p>L&#39;uli Nishmas Etta Ahuva bas Yaakov</p><p><br></p><p>Oct 5, 2026</p><p>Mon</p><p>24 Tishrei 5787</p><p>Ohalos 8:3-4</p><p><br></p><p><strong>Mishnah Ohalos 8:3</strong></p><p><strong>משנה אהלות ח׳:ג׳</strong></p><p>אֵלּוּ מְבִיאִין וְלֹא חוֹצְצִין. הַשִּׁדָּה, וְהַתֵּבָה, וְהַמִּגְדָּל, כַּוֶּרֶת הַקַּשׁ, כַּוֶּרֶת הַקָּנִים, וּבוֹר סְפִינָה אֲלֶכְּסַנְדְּרִית, שֶׁאֵין לָהֶם שׁוּלַיִם וְאֵינָן מַחֲזִיקִים אַרְבָּעִים סְאָה בְלַח, שֶׁהֵם כּוֹרַיִם בְּיָבֵשׁ. וִירִיעָה, וּסְקוֹרְטְיָא, וּקְטָבֹלְיָא, וְסָדִין, וּמַפָּץ, וּמַחֲצֶלֶת, שֶׁאֵין עֲשׂוּיִין אֹהָלִים, וּבְהֵמָה וְחַיָּה שֶׁמֵּתוּ, וְאֳכָלִים טְמֵאִים. מוּסָף עֲלֵיהֶם, הָרֵחַיִם שֶׁל אָדָם:</p><p><strong>Synopsis from R&#39; Shloimie</strong></p><p>He notes this mishnah is the opposite of the first category in משנה א׳: the same שידה, תיבה, מגדל, כוורות and בור ספינה אלכסנדרית, but without שולים or not holding ארבעים סאה בלח. These smaller כלים are מקבל טומאה, so they cannot be a חציצה.</p><p>Likewise יריעה, סקורטיא, קטבוליא, סדין, מפץ and מחצלת not made as אהלים are not a חציצה. Dead animals are טמא and cannot block, and neither can אוכלים טמאים; the רמב״ם in פירוש המשניות explains that טמאים here includes food that is only הוכשר לקבל טומאה.</p><p>The mishnah adds הרחים של אדם, a hand mill, which is מקבל טומאה and so cannot be a חציצה.</p><p><br></p><p><strong>Mishnah Ohalos 8:4</strong></p><p><strong>משנה אהלות ח׳:ד׳</strong></p><p>אֵלּוּ חוֹצְצִים וְלֹא מְבִיאִין. מַסֶּכֶת פְּרוּסָה, וַחֲבִילֵי הַמִּטָּה, וְהַמִּשְׁפָּלוֹת וְהַסְּרִיגוֹת שֶׁבַּחֲלוֹנוֹת:</p><p><strong>Synopsis from R&#39; Shloimie</strong></p><p>He calls this the third category, חוצצין ולא מביאין: these can block טומאה but cannot spread it, because there is space in between. מסכת פרוסה is a weave with its strings spread out, and חבילי המטה are the spread-out ropes of a bed; they are not an אהל until woven together.</p><p>The רא״ש explains משפלות as baskets used to carry out זבל, and the סריגות שבחלונות are the ropes across windows; these too can be a חציצה but are not מביא טומאה.</p><p><br></p><p><em>Hebrew text from Sefaria (Torat Emet 357).</em></p>
