Not a Rich Kid - Instagram Myron My on Working-Class Creativity, Theatre Reviewing, and the Cost of Art
Host Kath Dolheguy interviews Melbourne-based creative and theatre reviewer Myron Myi about making creative work possible while needing stable, living-wage employment. Myron describes growing up in Epping with Greek migrant parents who worked in factories, his father’s redundancy, and how limited exposure to the arts and the queer community shaped his early life. He traces a winding path through media studies, teaching in Japan and London, retail and travel work, roles at the Australian Ballet and Arts Centre, and his current full-time events job at Melbourne University, alongside unpaid theatre reviewing via his decade-old site My Melbourne Arts, where he has seen up to 200+ shows a year. They discuss low pay and long hours in arts jobs, barriers for working-class people, tokenistic concessions, pay-what-you-can successes, access to information, and how ticket prices don’t predict quality, with Myron recommending theatre group Hot Lunch.
