Are we discussing policies—or repeating labels without understanding them?
In this episode of Puerto Rico: Open Your Eyes, host Edwin Ortiz examines four frequently used political terms: capitalism, socialism, Marxism, and communism. With Puerto Rico and Spain central to the conversation, we explore why public healthcare, education, pensions, and assistance programs do not automatically make an economy socialist or communist.
The discussion brings these questions home to Puerto Rico through familiar examples: Medicare, Social Security, Medicaid, nutritional assistance through PAN, public schools, housing assistance, and the publicly owned water authority. These programs differ in ownership, funding, and purpose. Understanding those differences helps us evaluate them accurately.
We also examine Spain’s market economy, constitutional recognition of private enterprise, and publicly funded healthcare. If public services can coexist with capitalism in Puerto Rico and the United States, why should their existence in Spain automatically justify a different label?
