The Shrine That Kept Him Close | After Midnight

The shrine had been part of her family home for generations. Fresh flowers were placed beside the candles, small keepsakes were carefully dusted, and no one ever considered taking it down. Growing up, she assumed it was simply another expression of her family’s faith.

Then, after moving back home as an adult, she came downstairs late one night and found a little boy sitting quietly beside it.

There were no children in the house.

When she finally told her mother what she had seen, she began learning why the shrine had been created in the first place—and why the family had continued caring for it long after the person who built it was gone.

It had started with the death of a child. And after generations of candles, flowers, and remembrance, it seemed possible that the family hadn’t simply kept his memory alive.

Maybe they had kept him close too.
