Others arrive carrying the weight of a lifetime. And, occasionally, a book arrives with a poignancy its author could never have intended.

📚 Today, I turn to Adam & Eve, the final novel by Jeffrey Archer, published by HarperCollins on 6 October 2026. Archer died just one day earlier, on 5 October. There is something profoundly sombre about that coincidence. A storyteller who had spent decades mastering the art of the final twist has, in the circumstances of his farewell, left readers confronting one that fiction could scarcely have made more affecting.

Born in London in 1940, Archer lived a life almost as eventful as the plots he constructed. A former Conservative MP, a man who experienced spectacular reversals of fortune, and a novelist who rebuilt his life through words, he became one of the world's most recognisable masters of suspense. From Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less to the phenomenal Kane and Abel, his stories understood ambition, betrayal, loyalty, and the extraordinary turns that can alter a human life. He was also a devoted admirer of India and its readers, whose affection he cherished.

At the India Global Forum Awards in 2025, Archer revealed that he was working on what he intended to be his final novel. The idea had been with him for six years, and he believed it might even surpass Kane and Abel, which had reached its 134th reprint at the time. Now, that ambition lends this book an almost elegiac significance.

🕯️ Adam & Eve begins on 11 November 1918, the day the guns of the First World War fall silent. Two children are born: Evelina, the daughter of an Earl, and Adam, the son of a shepherd
