Robert Pollard: "Richard Davies is one of the last great songwriters on planet Earth."

Alright…this is a big one for me, as one of my long-time musical heroes, Richard Davies of The Moles & Cardinal, joins me on this week's episode to let me discuss his body of work as well as his music film pick, The Wrecking Crew!!!!

We discuss why no two of his albums are the same (down to multiple re-issues of the same album, with different versions of the songs!), coming from Wales to Australia to form The Moles, their John Peel session, pulling stressed out bagpipe players and unknown trumpet players into his recordings, how writing lyrics got easier for him as he got older, both of us writing original songs for Robert Pollard (Richard with Cosmos and myself with The Takeovers), how the album Instinct was about being alone and afraid in NYC, working with Poison Idea’s Slayer Hippie and Heatmiser’s Tony Lash on the Cardinal record, being inspired by Ban Roll-on jingles of the 60s, The Beatles' Christmas flexidisc, the majesty of Flying Nun bands, Brian Wilson’s experiences with The Wrecking Crew, the hell or high water attitude of Richard's songwriting, our situations of being courted iin the 90s and the sinister vibe in it, T. Rex and Flo & Eddie’s backing vocals, the professionalism and experimentaliism of The Wrecking Crew and how they played on The Byrds' Mr. Tamboruine Man, Carole Kaye’s bass and the freedom in her bass playing, Cher and more!
