This week on Shoalhaven Youthlocal, the team meets one of the ocean’s most charismatic whales, investigates a dark chapter of Australian crime, takes issue with the weather app, and gets very real about our relationship with our phones.
🐋 Tide Talk heads to the Arctic to discover the fascinating world of beluga whales. Bella explores why these social white whales are such incredible communicators, how they survive icy Arctic conditions, and some amazing stories of belugas mimicking human speech, copying dolphins and even retrieving a dropped phone from the ocean!
🕵️ Morning Cup of Mystery examines the disturbing case of John Balaban, a Romanian-born chemist convicted of murder in Adelaide in 1953. The team looks at the investigation that connected his crimes in Australia with an earlier unsolved killing in Paris, eventually leading to his conviction and execution at Adelaide Gaol.
☀️ Arlo Has a Complaint — or perhaps the beginning of a brand-new Sternly Worded Letters segment! Arlo takes aim at the Apple Weather app for describing rising barometric pressure as an “improvement” in the weather. But is sunshine always good weather when farmers need rain, tanks are running dry and bushfire conditions are worsening? An unexpected debate about the language we use to describe something as ordinary as the weather.
📱 Living Skillfully tackles phone management and phone addiction. Mia and Lillian have an honest conversation about social media, screen time, staying connected with friends, phone-free time and the tools they use to manage their own habits. They also share their perspectives on school phone bans, including what they think works, what doesn’t, and why young people may sometimes need access to their phones for support and communication.
It’s an episode full of fascinating facts, strong opinions and the kind of conversations that happen when young people get the chance to explore the issues that matter to them.
