Chris shares a passionate and often hilarious AA talk about the difference between attending the fellowship and working the program of Alcoholics Anonymous. Raised in the Texas Hill Country with an alcoholic father, he found relief in alcohol at 17 and eventually became a functioning drinker whose life kept narrowing even as he tried therapy, treatment, and years of going in and out of AA. At his darkest bottom, Chris returned to a Big Book-focused meeting but began backing toward the door before anyone could reach him. A young member stopped him with three words - "Sit down, cowboy" - and the group responded with more than slogans: they brought him back the next morning, helped him take the Third Step, started his inventory that afternoon, taught him to pray and meditate, and immediately gave him useful work. Two weeks later, sitting on the tailgate of his truck, Chris realized the obsession had lifted for the first time. He uses that experience to challenge every member to carry a clear Twelve Step message, sponsor others, give newcomers genuine responsibility, and understand that nobody in an AA room is merely there to receive help; each person may be exactly who the next alcoholic needs.
